The start of the new year means a fresh start, and for many that means job hunting. “My best advice is for everyone to refresh their resumes,” Janeen Hooks, Associate Vice President of the Columbus Urban League said.

She says tailoring your resume to the job you want will help bypass online algorithms that judge your resume.

“For example,” she said, “if you’re a looking for a position that is an administrative role and the position description, they have highlighted someone with excellent organizational skills and they have key software experiences, you want to make those key words match those in your resume.”

Another tip for job seekers is networking.

“To me it’s one of the most important things a job seeker can do,” Chris Borja said. He founded ‘Become A Better Networker’ and believes the key is getting out there and meeting people.

“You don’t need to just go to job fairs to find a job,” Borja said. “There are so many networking and job opportunities. you can go to the chamber, the number of different networking groups in town, you can go to the different non-profit functions. Anywhere there’s people,” he said.

Both Hooks and Borja say having a LinkedIn profile is crucial. They say it’s one of the top places recruiters use, and they encourage job seekers to use the hashtag #ONO to help get noticed.

“It just means open to new opportunities,” Borja said, “And there are many recruiters who will actually look up hashtag ONO and it will pull up everyone who is open to new opportunities.”
